Questions about detecting seizures

What kinds of seizures does NightWatch detect?

NightWatch detects the majority of clinically urgent epileptic seizures, including tonic-clonic seizures, tonic seizures that last for more than 30 seconds, hypermotor seizures, and clustered myoclonic seizures.

How does NightWatch detect a seizure?

NightWatch automatically starts working once the patient lies down in bed with NightWatch around their upper arm. From that point on, NightWatch monitors the patient’s motion AND heart rate with precision. An advanced algorithm detects possible epileptic seizures by identifying changes in heart rate and/or specific movements.

What happens when NightWatch detects a seizure?

When NightWatch detects a potential seizure, a signal is transmitted to the corresponding base station, which triggers an alarm or sends an alert to a suitable call system.


Questions about the alerts and range of NightWatch

What is the range between the armband and the base station?

The range between the broadcaster and receiver depends on the home’s foundation. The range is about 80 meters in an open field but is generally 10 - 20 meters (as the crow flies) inside buildings. The range is lowest in buildings with concrete and braided steel structures.

Is NightWatch able to alert caregivers beyond the range of the wireless signal?

The base station of NightWatch can be connected to virtually all existing call systems. If required, LivAssured can supply an optional mobile phone module that can transmit an alert to one or more telephones via a mobile phone call.

Does the alarm switch-off of its own accord?

Yes, the alarm automatically switches off after 3 minutes and automatically reverts to detection mode.

What happens if NightWatch is out of range?

A warning sound is emitted if NightWatch is beyond the range of the base station (2 beeps every 2 seconds).

Questions about using NightWatch

From which age is NightWatch suitable to wear?

NightWatch is most suitable for everyone above the age of 4.

Is NightWatch comfortable for everyone to wear?

NightWatch consists of a comfortable armband worn around the upper arm during the night. The armband has to be adjusted to size just once and can thereafter easily be placed around the arm, even by young children themselves. Most patients experience no discomfort once the armband is placed around their arm. However, patients with a mental disability may be resistant to wearing the armband.

How long does the battery last?

A charged NightWatch should last 10 hours minimum but it usually lasts for 16 hours. Connect NightWatch to the charger straight after use. NightWatch will then automatically switch off and start recharging itself. If NightWatch is not always connected to the charger immediately after use, this will cause the battery’s lifespan to decrease. A warning sound will be emitted if the NightWatch battery is running low (4 beeps every 2 seconds). Also, see the NightWatch notification chart for the different notifications and warnings that NightWatch may emit and what they mean.

Does it matter how you wear the armband?

NightWatch must be worn so that it is in direct contact with the skin, preferably on the front of the upper arm. NightWatch has no top or bottom, just a front, and back.

Why is NightWatch intended specifically for nocturnal detection?

NightWatch starts working once the wearer has been lying down in bed in a horizontal position for a while. If a patient gets out of bed and thus assumes a vertical position or wakes up, NightWatch will temporarily switch off its alarm function until the patient resumes a horizontal position. Monitoring is most problematic during sleep, and that is when we are best able to differentiate a seizure from normal behaviour.


My NightWatch sometimes sounds the alarm when there is no seizure going on. Why does this happen? 

It is important to understand the NightWatch alarm functionality properly. See the notification chart with the instructions for use, which differentiates between technical alarms and epilepsy alerts. Technical alarms can occur when NightWatch is beyond the range of the base station. This may happen if the wearer is lying on the arm around which NightWatch is being worn. This problem is often solved by placing the base station closer to the patient’s bedroom. If the alarm can no longer be heard as a result of this relocation, an optional mobile phone module can be connected to NightWatch.

An alarm may also be activated if the patient makes certain movements similar to an epileptic seizure, such as scratching, or if there is a sudden increase in heart rate. The likelihood of false alarms increases if the patient is a restless sleeper. It is also possible for the seizure that triggered the NightWatch alarm to be over before you arrive on-site, thus giving the impression of a false alarm.

My NightWatch alarm sometimes fails to go off when a seizure occurs. Why is this?

The purpose of NightWatch is to detect possible severe epileptic seizures that may require assistance. This means that minor or very short seizures may not activate the alarm. The patient may also suffer from a very specific type of seizure that does not trigger NightWatch. It is also possible that the wearer of NightWatch gets up or stretches his arms into the air at the very beginning of a seizure. This will decrease the sensitivity of NightWatch because it will think that the wearer is in an upright and is not sleeping. In these cases, it might help to put the bracelet around the lower leg because the legs often tend to stay horizontal during a seizure in bed and therefore NightWatch will stay in 'high sensitivity mode' longer. 

Does the way a patient lies in bed affect the functioning of NightWatch?

Provided that the armband wearer sleeps in a horizontal position, NightWatch will detect their possible seizures. Other than that, it makes no difference whether the wearer sleeps on their back, stomach, or side.

My NightWatch has suddenly stopped working. Why is this?

The slider on the NightWatch arm module may have been switched off (for unknown reasons) because it has accidentally been moved outwards or to the centre. In that case, the slider needs to be moved back inwards. 

Only 1 of the green lights at the bottom of my NightWatch is illuminated. Is one of its green heart rate lights defective?

Probably not. NightWatch may switch off one of the two heart rate lights if too much light is being reflected onto the sensor. This can happen if someone has particularly fair skin. NightWatch then only uses 1 light to be able to function better. Often, if you place just your index finger on the two sensors, 1 of the 2 heart rate lights will go out. If you briefly place the heart rate lights on a dark surface, both lights should be illuminated. Both heart rate lights should also be illuminated for the first few seconds directly after the armband has been removed from the charger. If that is not the case, there is indeed a defective light.
